Congratulations to Anderson Professor Nick Flor, who is a co-Principal Investigator on the grant "SNM: Scalable Surface Corrugation of Silicon Surfaces for Enhanced Light Trapping in Solar Cells" recently awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to the University of New Mexico (Sang E. Han, Nick Flor, Peter Schunk, Steven Brueck). The estimated award total is one million dollars.
The project combines fundamental research on creating efficient, lightweight solar photovoltaics, with interactive immersive visualizations that raise social awareness about alternative energy.

Xin Luo Editorial and Panel Appointments
Dr. Xin (Robert) Luo has recently been appointed Editor in Chief for the International Journal of Information and Computer Security beginning April 1, 2016. He was also invited to be a National Science Foundation Expert Review Panelist for a Secure and Trust Cybersecurity taking place in Washington, D.C. Only 10 scholars are invited to this social science security panel.

Gouvea and Francis Book Forthcoming
UNM Anderson professor Raul Gouvea and Center for Indigenous Development coordinator Jaye Francis have collaborated on Indigenous Women Entrepreneurs of New Mexico: Surpassing Barriers and Stereotypes, a book to be published by UNM Press. The book will showcase the experiences of Native women entrepreneurs in the state of New Mexico, consisting of first-person accounts detailing how their businesses began and what it took to make them thrive. UNM Anderson assistant professor Dr. Aaron French was recently featured on KOB TV in a segment on his new social networking app, Sociabile, designed to connect users to friends and family while maintaining privacy.
"When Facebook and Myspace, those companies really started, it was something new and everybody was jumping on board, it became the latest trend. But people didn't really understand the ramifications of it as far as privacy," Dr. French said in the feature.

Rich Brody At Colorado State Ethics Conference
The conference featured updates on auditor independence for public company auditors, the anatomy of a fraudster, perspectives of a whistleblower, and networking with CSU alumni and other accounting professionals. Other speakers included Richard Bowen (featured on 60 Minutes), Michael Husich (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission), and Sonny Lubick, former CSU football coach.

Manuel Montoya Keynote Speaker At Undergraduate Commencement
Anderson School of Management's Dr. Manuel Montoya has been chosen as the keynote speaker for UNM's undergraduate commencement on Friday, Dec 11, 2015 at 06:00 pm in the WisePies Arena aka The Pit. The Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony is the campus-wide graduation ceremony for Bachelor's and Associate's degree candidates from all schools, colleges, and degree programs. Degree candidates will proceed across the stage and be recognized individually.
Dr. Montoya is a professor of global structures, an interdisciplinary scholar of globalization and the factors that produce a global political economy. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is a Rhodes Scholar and Truman Scholar. He is the CEO of his own global consulting firm, In Medias Res Consulting, which has provided support to global NGOs and INGOs including the United Nations and UNESCO. A native from Mora, New Mexico, he has returned to UNM because of his interest in New Mexico as a global emerging economy. He has taught a broad array of coursework from global culture and the history of economic thought to international management. His interdisciplinary training has positioned him to think critically about the circumstances that produce globalization and how nation-states interact with new global challenges.
His research focuses on the interdisciplinary origins of global culture and its impact on economic and management issues including work on human security, expeditionary and conflict economics, global culture as an intangible firm resource, expeditionary economics, global export analysis, international trade, emerging economies, and global economic sustainability. He is the faculty adviser of International Business Students Global, whose emphasis is on issues that shape the global agenda.

Parish Lecture Series Features Subramanian Iyer
Parish Memorial Library's Fall 2015 Lecture Series features Anderson School of Management Assistant Professor of Finance Dr. Subramanian Iyer.
Dr. Iyer will present Insider Trading: A Clear or Murky Concept? on Wednesday, October 21 from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. at Parish Memorial Library. Learn about low and high profile (think Martha Stewart) insider trading cases, the rules pertaining to insider trading, and the latest academic research on insider trading that may help practitioners develop a good platform on insider trading.

Rebuilding A Cultural Olympiad

International Business Students Global (IBSG), led by Dr. Manuel Montoya, has proposed a three-day version of the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market to be held during the beginning of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Dr. Montoya and his IBSG students will present on their efforts to revisit the concept of a “Cultural Olympiad” and how UNM is positioned to be the long-term leader in connecting two of the world’s largest cultural events to each other.
This event takes place on Monday, November 2 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the UNM Latin American and Iberian Institute on 801 Yale Blvd. NE, and is free and open to the public.

Manuel Montoya To Speak At Alliance For Artisan Enterprise Launch
The Alliance for Artisan Enterprise, a collaboration between the Aspen Institute and the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues for the U.S. Department of State, is a global platform to promote artisan enterprises with a specific focus on women artisans and their families. Over the past three years the Alliance has grown to over 60 members including artisan businesses, artisan support organizations, corporations, foundations, NGOs, international organizations, and governments.
To scale the impact of the Alliance, the U.S. Department of State will launch the Global Campaign for the artisan sector on September 10, 2015. The event will provide a combination of high visibility media engagement, high level speakers, innovative solution-finding sessions, and a multimedia competition to engage a wide variety of audiences to scale artisan initiatives.
Dr. Manuel Montoya has been invited to speak at the campaign launch. Dr. Montoya is passionately committed to the growth of artisan enterprise. This summer, he and a group of students from IBSG traveled to Rio de Janeiro to present a proposal to Rio's Olympic committee in support of the establishment of a folk art market during the Games in order to sustain traditional arts and boost the local economy. Dr. Montoya will be speaking on the general significance of the creative economy as a part of the world economy, and then will talk about the Olympic folk art market concept developed by IBSG.

In Memoriam: Daniel Michael Slate
Anderson School of Management remembers Dr. Daniel Michael Slate (1930 - 2014), Anderson professor emeritus.
Dr. Slate earned his BS in Psychology, and his MA and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Washington. A veteran of the United States Naval Reserve, Dr. Slate joined the faculty of Anderson School of Management in 1967. He was active in community service, serving on the boards of Catholic Social Services, the Nob Hill Main Street Association, and Carrie Tingley Hospital's Strategic Planning Committee among other non-profit concerns. He served as a consultant to various state agencies, professional organizations, and research corporations, and published several books and monographs on economics and marketing. He was a member of the American Economic Association, the American Society for the Advancement of Sciences, and was recognized in American Men of Sciences and Who's Who in American Education.
Former students remember Dr. Slate as a memorable and insightful instructor who had a profound influence upon their lives. Professor Emeritus Dr. Allen Parkman recalls that Dr. Slate was a charismatic teacher, and he was instrumental in his hiring in 1975.

Suleiman Kassicieh Interviewed For New York Times
Distinguished Professor Suleiman Kassicieh was recently interviewed by the New York Times for a feature on EnChroma spectacles, lenses originally developed for surgeons but subsequently discovered to frequently correct colorblindness. Dr. Kassicieh remarked on public reluctance to accept new technology.

John Benavidez Featured In UNMProud
UNMProud, a new UNM website that features stories on notable students, faculty, staff, and alumni, recently profiled Anderson School of Management's John Benavidez.
The article detailed Benavidez's dedication to providing students with real-world experience, focusing on his mentorship in Anderson marketing campaign and competitions. Anderson marketing students recently took top honors in the Energy and Jobs Tomorrow Case Challenge, a national student marketing competition sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute (API) that included 20 teams from universities across the country.

Faculty Promotions
The following members of Anderson School of Management's faculty have achieved promotions after review processes.
Accounting: Robert Gary was promoted to associate professor and granted tenure. Matthew Pickard and Ling Zhou both received renewed three-year contracts. Ann Brooks was promoted to senior lecturer.
Marketing and Information and Decision Sciences: Dimitri Kapelianis was promoted to associate professor and was granted tenure.
Organizational Studies: David Cavazos and Kathryn Jacobson were both promoted to associate professor and granted tenure.
Finance, International, Technology, and Entrepreneurship: Maryann Majadillas and Saurabh Ahluwalia both received renewed three-year contracts.
