Spring 2015 Final Issue

Spring 2015 Commencement

This year's Spring Convocation will take place Saturday, May 9 at 4:00 p.m. in Johnson Center. The scheduled keynote speaker is Dean Emeritus Doug M. Brown.

The Spring 2015 class speakers are as follows:  Brandyn Jordan, receiving his Masters of Accounting degree with a focus in Information Assurance, and Austin Tidwell, who will be receiving his BBA in Marketing Management.

The public is invited.

McKinnon Distinguished CEO Lecture Series: Edward Lewis

The Anderson School of Management is proud to present prominent UNM alumnus Edward Lewis as the featured speaker of the McKinnon Distinguished CEO Lecture Series.  Mr. Lewis is one of the co-founders of Essence Communications, one of the country’s largest African American multi-media organizations.

Anderson Students Win Daniels Fund Competition

Students from the UNM Anderson School of Management won the 4th annual Daniels Fund Consortium Business Ethics Case Competition in Denver over the weekend.


2015 Business Plan Competition

The tenth annual Business Plan Competition was a rousing success! Twenty teams competed this year: ten in the Technology Ventures Track and ten in the Entrepreneurial Ventures Track. More than $100,000 in prizes were awarded to winning teams. Over 40 judges comprised of venture capitalists, angel investors, experienced entrepreneurs, and local business leaders participated, and more than 25 faculty and staff members assisted with the competition and awards banquet.

The winning team on the Technology Ventures Track was Twist Resist. Twist Resist is a patent pending rotational exercise machine which allows the user to target a number of areas of the muscular structure of the body previously difficult to target. The winning team on the Entrepreneurial Ventures Track was Silver Leaf Farms, a producer and distributor of premium quality hydroponic tomatoes and other vegetables for year-round sales to local high-end restaurants, grocers, and farmer's markets.

Dr. Sul Kassicieh, founder and chair of the competition, said, "As the UNM Business Plan Competition celebrated its tenth anniversary this year, we want to express our gratitude to the business community of New Mexico.  The supporters of the competition have donated over $1.5 million for this eco-system to thrive as well as many hours mentoring the teams, judging the competition and providing follow-on advice to the businesses that get started as a result.  To all of our supporters, we say 'thanks.'"

Fuel My Career Challenge Featured On KASA

Alexandria Chavez and Jacob Moffitt, two Marketing students competing in the Fuel My Career challenge, were recently featured on KASA 2 News.

UNM is one of 20 schools throughout the country participating in the Energy and Jobs Tomorrow Case Challenge. The program, sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and developed and managed by EdVenture Partners, challenges students to create an integrated marketing campaign aimed at educating and informing millennials of the wide range of jobs available in the oil and natural gas industry, and driving the target market to the Oil and Gas Workforce website. 

Students in John Benavidez's digital marketing course have formed a student-run agency to develop and execute the campaign, using a $1,500 budget provided by API. In addition to receiving scholarship awards, the top three participating schools will be invited to present their research, campaign plan and results to the API Communications Committee and senior executives in San Francisco.

Kathryn Jacobson and Ryan Jacobson: Publication

Dr. Kathryn Jacobson and Dr. Ryan Jacobson, Department of Organizational Studies, have recently had a paper accepted for publication in Social, Psychological, and Personality Science. Their paper, 'Self-control moderates the effectiveness of influence attempts highlighting injunctive social norms,' is co-authored with C.R. Mortensen and R.B. Cialdini and will be published in an upcoming edition.

Dr. Berman Presentation At Honors College

Dr. Shawn Berman, Department of Organizational Studies, is currently serving as a Honors Distinguished Teaching Fellow for Spring 2015.  As part of this appointment, all Honors Distinguished are required to give a talk.  His presentation will be on April 8, at 4 pm in the Honors College Forum, located on the ground floor of the Student Health Center building . He will speak about the changing employment relationship and the challenges it presents to graduates in the 21st century. The event is open to all.

UNM Anderson's Advisement Center was recently featured in an article in UNM Newsroom. The article focused on the unique resources offered by Advisement, helping students to polish their personal brand and prepare them for the professional world. The article touches on academic advisement best practices, career services, and personal presentation.

Jacqueline Baca Named Spring 2015 Commencement Speaker

Jacqueline Baca, President of Bueno Foods, will be the keynote speaker at UNM Anderson's Spring 2014 Convocation ceremony.

Jacqueline Baca has been President, a Director and a stockholder of Bueno Foods since 1986.  She is a native of Albuquerque, born to a family with multi-generational ties to New Mexico. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Master's degree in Business Administration, both from the University of New Mexico. 

Under Jacqueline’s leadership, the company has become a successful, professionally-managed organization, attaining 98% name recognition in the New Mexico marketplace, and increasing its sales thirteen-fold and employment five-fold.  She leads the team that has expanded distribution beyond New Mexico and throughout the United States.  She has guided the company through three major expansions in the South Barelas Industrial Park in her family's original neighborhood.  And under her leadership, the company has developed an excellent reputation for its products and service, as well as its reputation as a desirable place to work.

Jacqueline has a personal goal to help provide educational and job opportunities to disadvantaged and minority persons.  She accomplishes this through her business activities as President of Bueno Foods and through her community service. 

The Spring 2015 Convocation takes place on May 9 at 4:00 p.m. in Johnson Center.

Headshot Session

There will be a walk-in headshot photo session for Anderson faculty, staff, and students on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in the IA House across the street from Anderson. Photos are free and attendees will receive a high-resolution digital copy. These photos can be used for LinkedIn, personal web sites, social media and the Anderson web site (for faculty and staff).

For students who anticipate applying for Anderson scholarships later this semester, these photos can be used at the scholarship reception for recipients.

Photos will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. For those that are unable to attend the April session, a May session will be announced shortly.
