Get Covered New Mexico

For many New Mexicans, the Affordable Care Act can be a bewildering maze of information. Anderson School of Management Professor Nick Flor has been instrumental in developing an application that provides New Mexicans with tools and data designed to help them better understand what their health insurance options might be, where they can apply for coverage, and what documentation they’ll need to enroll.

Dr. Flor, teaming with University of New Mexico School of Medicine graduates Dr. Erin Corriveau, currently a preventive medicine fellow at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore and Dr. Kate McAlmont, a resident in the UNM School of Medicine’s Department of Family and Community Medicine, intend the free app to provide users with solid, truthful information about the ACA.

EMBA/PMBA Afternoon With Lobos

On Saturday, January 18, the Anderson School of Management-Executive MBA program sponsored the Lobos vs. Fresno State women's basketball game.

EMBA Welcome Back Breakfast

The  Executive MBA Class of 2016 students had a wonderful opportunity to meet, ask questions and network with the current EMBA cohorts at the EMBA Welcome Back Breakfast on January 11.

Spring 2014 Public Speaking Workshop

Question: What is the #1 skill that employers look for when hiring?

Answer: Communication

UNM Anderson students seeking a BBA or MBA have the opportunity to attend a free workshop and receive one-on-one coaching throughout the semester.

Sarah Minnich, a Graduate Public Speaking instructor from the Department of Communication and Journalism, will facilitate a 2-hour introductory workshop and hold ongoing public speaking coaching throughout the semester for interested students. Note: interested students need not attend the workshop to receive individual and/or group coaching.

In the workshop, Miss Minnich will address strategies for audience analysis, opening and closing a presentation, delivery, content, visual aids, managing anxiety, and other important skill sets for business and professional speakers. The workshop and coaching sessions will enhance communication skills that will ultimately serve in improvement of delivery, professionalism, confidence, and group-speaking cohesion. This workshop is suggested for those looking to improve in your personal, interpersonal and group presentations for academic courses and job interviews.

The workshop will be held from 10:00am to 12:00pm on Wednesday, February 19th in ASM 1068. Snacks and ASM swags will be available to students who RSVP in advance. RSVP here.

The Big 'I'

Internships give Anderson students the chance to get the skills they need, build a significant professional network, and start out in the job market with a polished resume and plenty of interview practice!  By completing one or two internships while working toward a degree, Anderson students can significantly impact their chances of landing a professional career that utilizes their education and individual skill set.

In the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ 2014 Job Outlook survey, 96% of employers said that relevant work experience is the most important factor in their hiring decision.  Another national survey conducted by Internships.com revealed that 66% of employers believe interview performance and relevant work experience are the most important factors —far more significant than strong academic performance.  Furthermore, the research says that 70% of companies made full-time job offers to their interns.

On Thursday, January 30th, in the Jackson Student Center, Anderson students have the opportunity to open doors to new opportunities, meet community business leaders and build their confidence as they transition from student to professional. Employers from Sandia National Laboratories and New Mexico State Personnel Office, to National Electric/Nicor, Array Technologies and Colliers International will be sending recruiters to connect with students. 

The BBA Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the MBA/MACCT Fair runs from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Anderson Graduation Trends On Twitter

At Anderson School of Management's Fall 2013 Convocation, attendees were encouraged to log in to Twitter and live-tweet the event. Details on the ceremony, including photos, Dean Doug Brown's welcome, and guest speaker Daniel Burrell's address were tweeted by students, staff, and faculty. Dean Brown even got in on the action:

As a result of the event's popularity, #ASMGrad13 made Albuquerque's list of trending tweets.

Spring Break In Northern Italy

The Anderson School Community is invited to join a group of UNM business students and friends on a trip to Northern Italy over spring break 2014. 

This custom tour will highlight the Italian lakes, starting and ending in Milan.  See where Ernest Hemingway wrote his novel ‘A Farewell to Arms,’ travel into Southern Switzerland to the “Monte Carlo of Switzerland,” and experience the Italian-made amaretti (almond or apricot kernel biscuits) and Amaretto.  Explore Bellagio, Verona, Limone, and more than five lakes while learning about the culture, history, economy, people, and more!

Intersession CPA Presentations

Students in the online Accounting Cycle class offered over winter intersession attended a presentation by Raul J. Anaya CPA, CFE, CGFM, Senior Audit Manager, and Jeremy Stuart, CPA, MBA, Tax Manager, both of CliftonLarsenAllen, LLP.

Mr. Anaya and Mr. Stuart offered anecdotes, insights, and practical advice on careers in public accounting.  The presentation was in a question and answer format addressing issues such as "What is a typical day for a staff accountant?" and "How much travel is involved in public accounting?"

Professor Robert Tepper of Anderson Accounting Department discussed the topic of taking and passing the CPA exam. Students had questions in areas such as the differences in requirements across states in obtaining a CPA license, and the experience requirements in New Mexico.

A Message from Dean Brown

Anderson students are prize winners! Nearly every contest they have entered, they have distinguished themselves. Just in the last two years, the following awards have been won:

• The grand prize in the 2012 NASBA Center for the Public Trust, National Ethics in Action Video competition. The winning video was produced by Drew Wayner and Dezlyn Chacon, two graduate students in O.C. Ferrell's Marketing and Society course. The video is entitled "The Case of the Questionable Reference." This project supports the work of the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at UNM.

• Marketing students at the UNM Anderson School of Management took top honors in the 2013 American Petroleum Institute Adventures in Energy Case Competition. UNM emerged the winner after topping the University of Findlay and Florida Institute of Technology, the other two top teams who qualified to travel to San Francisco for the finals.

• The UNM Information Assurance team ranked in the top 15% at the Cyber Security Awareness Week – Capture the Flag Competition hosted by New York University. The 72 hour competition is designed for undergraduate students who want to learn more about computer security by participating in exercises that require them to react to cyber-attacks found in the real world.

Participating in these contests provide valuable experience in the subject matter, in working together as a team, and in honing presentational skills.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to our faculty advisors who dedicate so much time and experience to guide our students. And the faculty have won their own share of prizes, including: 

• The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the world's largest anti-fraud organization, has named UNM Anderson Accounting Professor Rich Brody Educator of the Year. The prestigious ACFE Outstanding Achievement Awards recognize the contributions of anti-fraud professionals worldwide. The Educator of the Year Award is presented to an ACFE Educator member who has made an outstanding contribution in anti-fraud education.

• Dr. Joni Young has received the Outstanding Accounting Educator award from the New Mexico Society of Certified Public Accountants (NMSCPA). This is the second time in four years that Dr. Young has received the honor from the NMSCPA for her outstanding accomplishments in the classroom that enhance the reputation of the CPA profession. She also received the award in 2008.

• Anderson's John Benavidez received the Faculty Teaching Award. John has been teaching at UNM since 1997 upon graduating with his M.B.A. from Anderson. His teaching focuses on marketing including, but not limited to, advertising, digital marketing, promotions management, and marketing management. Benavidez constantly seeks to support students at UNM, serving as faculty advisor for Collegiate DECA and is a faculty representative on the Student Union Building Board.

• Professor O.C. Ferrell will receive the Academy of Marketing Science, Marketing Educator Award at the AMS annual conference in Indianapolis in May 2014. This is the highest ranking award for marketing education in the Academy of Marketing Science, the largest marketing educator-only group in the world.

• Dr. Kathryn Jacobson’s paper entitled Socio-emotional wealth and business risks in family controlled firms: Evidence from Spanish olive oil mills (published in 2007) has won the Administrative Science Quarterly Scholarly Impact Award. ASQ is one of the top scholarly journals in the field of management. The award was created to recognize the article published 5 years previously in ASQ that was judged to have had the greatest scholarly impact. A committee of board members carefully considered a slate of finalists among articles published in 2007 in ASQ, and Kathryn's article with Gomez-Mejia, Haynes, Nunez-Nickel, and Moyano-Fuentes was their unanimous choice.

• Dr. Hsuan-Chi Chen was nominated by UNM Office of Support for Effective Teaching for both the 2012-2013 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award and the 2013-2015 Presidential Teaching Fellow Award.

• Professor Linda Ferrell will become President of the Academy of Marketing Science at the Academy of Marketing Science annual conference in May 2014.

Millennial News Consumption And Social Media

Student teams in Dr. Catherine Roster’s Marketing Research BBA class this fall semester 2013 conducted a semester-long project for the Albuquerque Journal to discover why, how, and through what social media platforms Millennials age 18 to 24 consume news. 
 
The students collected data through focus groups and campus surveys of UNM and CNM students. 

Findings reveal that 18 to 24 year olds are interested in news concerning world and local happenings that are relevant in their lives and enjoy sharing news with family and friends. Millennials want their news to follow them—rather than the other way around—and rely upon portable devices like smartphones and tablets to keep up-to-date with current events and topics.  Graduate students in Dr. Nick Flor’s spring semester 2014 class will use the data collected by Dr. Roster’s students to develop a tablet app for the Albuquerque Journal.

The students in Dr. Roster’s class presented their findings to Bill Lang, Albuquerque Journal Chief Executive Officer, Brian Fantl, Albuquerque Journal’s Chief Operating Officer, and the Journal’s management team in the Johnson Marketing Center on December, 16, 2013.

The UNM Anderson School of Management Foundation Board will celebrate and honor its 2014 Hall of Fame Inductees on Thursday, March 13, 2014.

The theme this year is Lift Off, featuring the New Mexico Spaceport. Spaceport Director Christine Anderson is our keynote speaker, and astronaut Mike Mullane will also be in attendance. Other elements include the loan of a space capsule and space suit from the Alamogordo Space Museum. This is the 25th year for the event that celebrates the best and brightest of our alumni, faculty and community leaders.

John Benavidez In Top 100 Marketing Educators

Congratulations to John Benavidez, who was named among the Top 100 Marketing Professors on Twitter according to Social Media Marketing Magazine.

The criteria for inclusion, using an algorithm developed by Social Media Marketing's Kent Huffman, is as follows:  The instructor must:  1) provide useful content, 2) consistently engage with their followers, 3) truly "get it" when it comes to the best ways to use Twitter and other forms of social media, and 4) be active on Twitter as of December 9, 2013.
