Lunch And Learn: Bullying In The Workplace

Dr. Jackie Hood
Join us as Anderson School of Management's Dr. Jacqueline Hood discusses workplace bullying. Workplace bullying is defined as repeated, malicious, and health-endangering mistreatment of an employee by one or more other employees. Workplace bullying has been associated with negative outcomes for the individual being bullied and for the organization in which such actions take place. This talk will discuss the nature, frequency, and costs of workplace bullying in the context of an organization’s culture, ethical culture, and organizational moral development. Ways that organizations can and should deal with this increasingly common behavior will be proposed.

The event takes place on Monday, November 14, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in GSM Room 302 and is sponsored by UNM’s Student Center for the Public Trust.

RSVP to Cstaz@unm.edu to be included in the lunch count.

UNM Partners With Chinese Universities

Beijing Institute of Technology, Zhuhai
UNM Anderson Dean Craig White and Professor Robert Luo recently completed a trip to China. They visited the Beijing Institute of Technology, Zhuhai, the Southern China University of Technology, and Dongguan University. They were invited by the Beijing Institute of Technology, Zhuhai (BITZ) to attend the "high-table dinner" in honor of the class of freshmen entering the new collaborative program between BITZ and the Anderson School of Management. The initial freshman cohort is 72 students. These students will study for three years at BITZ before completing their BITZ degree at Anderson in their fourth year. All of the classes at BITZ will be taught in English. They will also be coming to UNM to study English language and other classes during the summers. The students will then apply to Anderson's graduate program under the usual admission requirements.

Over time, there will likely be many chances to benefit from these relationships. The Pearl Delta area is one of the most important export/import locations in China. These schools are all strategically located in this area.

Business Plan Competition Winners

L-R: Business Plan Competition Winners FormaPop and Karuna Colectiva
The University of New Mexico's Business Plan Competition strives to turn students into entrepreneurs. This year's event was notable in several respects:  not only did more sponsors contribute to the prize pool, raising the total prize amount from $75,000 to $87,000, but for the first time UNM signed a memorandum of understanding with Central New Mexico Community College, partnering with CNM to open the competition up to CNM students.

The competition runs on two tracks: technological, utilizing intellectual property developed by UNM or CNM students or from Sandia National Labs, Los Alamos National Labs, or STC.UNM; and entrepreneurial, a generalist startup competition that does not involve intellectual property. Six technological and twelve entrepreneurial teams competed for six prizes on each track.

This year's top technological prize went to FormaPop. FormaPop's team members Antonio Gutierrez, Scott McFall, and Aundre Huynh have developed an innovative baby bottle attachment that helps the mother by making feeding easier. The bottle's cap contains built-in formula storage for convenience on the go.

The top entrepreneurial prize went to Karuna Colectiva, conceived by Henry “Jake” Foreman.
Karuna Colectiva is a pop-up workshop where students work, learn, earn and apply what they learn from the Cycles of Life learning tools through market-based education.

Congratulations to all winners and participants!
