A Message From Dean Brown

As we hurtle toward the end of the semester and usher on another wonderful cohort of business graduates, they leave covered with good wishes from family, friends, faculty, and staff—wishes to the graduates for success in their careers.

But career success extends well beyond success on the job. True success also encompasses forging a satisfying personal life and being a good citizen. All three legs of the stool must be well grounded to serve as a step to higher levels of life achievement.

Fortunately, Anderson students are well-practiced in achieving a good work/life/community balance. Over 80% of our students hold significant jobs while enrolled here, and most engaged in significant community service activities. The Anderson experience breeds successful life experience.

Winter Break Heating And Technology Information

Beginning December 23rd, UNM will lower Anderson's thermostats to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and maintain that temperature until regular staff hours resume on January 2, when the buildings will be warmed to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. If you come in during that period, please dress warmly. If you use a space heater, please ensure that it is securely turned off before you leave.

Also, please make an effort to help with power conservation by powering off your computers while you’re away.  Our computers do have extensive power-conservation settings on them and use a very low amount of power when sleeping; however, since the break is an extended one, every bit of power we can conserve is beneficial to our community.  If you would like a hand powering down your machine, please contact the IT department at 277.6094 and/or send them permission to enter your office to power down your computer.

CFO Academy Professional Development Series

Executive and Professional Education Center (EPEC) at the UNM Anderson School of Management is the new home of the CFO Academy.

Founded by Brandon Haines and a prestigious board of trustees from diverse organizations, the CFO Academy is a professional association of Chief Financial Officers dedicated to the executive and leadership development of its community. The move to the Anderson School gives the CFO Academy an increased ability to market its events and develop stronger ties with the business community. The CFO Academy’s Professional Development Series offers financial professionals information about the changing nature of their business as well as excellent networking opportunities and continuing education credits.

Student Groups Take Top SBI Honors

Two student groups recently won "Top Three" honors from the Small Business Institute at the national level and have been invited to attend the annual SBI conference in Las Vegas, NV.

The teams are 'Starlight FUNiture' (Max Ebnother, Stacie Nowell, Peter Ray, Kevin Roybal, and Drew Wayner) from Dimitri Kapelianis' MGMT 582 class, and Speakeasy LLC (Jennifer Walker, Christine Shields, Andres Perez, and Maximo Lopez), from Raj Mahto's MGMT 495 class.

Achievements For Ferrells At Academy Of Marketing Science

Professor O.C. Ferrell will receive the Academy of Marketing Science, Marketing Educator Award at the AMS annual conference in Indianapolis in May 2014. This is the highest ranking award for marketing education in the Academy of Marketing Science, the largest marketing educator-only group in the world.

Professor Linda Ferrell will become President of the Academy of Marketing Science at the Academy of Marketing Science annual conference in May.

Congratulations to the Ferrells on these prestigious accomplishments!

Megan Hearting Recognized In Albuquerque Business First

Megan Hearting was recently featured in  People On The Move in the Albuquerque Business First publication, which recognizes notable promotions, new hires, or professional accomplishments in the Albuquerque business community.

Megan, previously the Director of Student Services for Anderson Advisement, was recently promoted to Student Success Manager for Anderson's Executive MBA program. Congratulations to Megan!

Seminar: The Challenge of Entrepreneurship

On November 22, at 9:30 a.m. meet Jim McNally ('86 PhD), COO, Applied Technology Associates and former CEO, TruTouch, and hear his thoughts on “The Challenge of Entrepreneurship.”

An expert in precision-sensing measurement and control devices with commercial and military applications, McNally brings invaluable insights for students considering an entrepreneurial career path. His contributions advanced the development and commercialization of noninvasive alcohol testing products, recognized by Time magazine as an invention of the year in 2006. The presentation in ASM 1064 will be followed by a question and answer session. A light breakfast will be served.

The series of six seminar workshops, supported by Los Alamos National Laboratory and US Bank, helps to prepare students for the UNM Business Plan Competition. A leading professional in the field of accounting, business finance, new business funding, technology management, business plan presentation skills, or other related area will offer students an extension of the knowledge they gain in the classroom. It also provides the opportunity for student entrepreneurs to initiate relationships with key community influencers in a dialogue-style setting.

Seminars are held on selected Friday dates in ASM 1064, from 9:30am – 11:30am. Seminars are open to students from Anderson and from all schools and colleges at UNM.

Business To Business Lecture Series

Scott Appelman
On Tuesday, December 10 at 7:30 a.m., the UNM Anderson Business to Business Breakfast Series presents Scott Appelman of Rainbow Ryders Hot Air Balloon Company. 

Mr. Appelman will discuss hot air ballooning as a career choice.  He will talk about how he started his business 30 years ago and currently operates 22 balloons and multiple national corporate contracts in Albuquerque, Phoenix, and Scottsdale, AZ.  Rainbow Ryders offers daily balloon flights year-round and accommodates 20 thousand passengers a year. 

Scott's talk will focus on New Mexico’s tourism industry, the number two industry in the state, and Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, and the impact they have in Albuquerque and the state of New Mexico. 

For the past 14 years Rainbow Ryders has been the only authorized company to offer rides at the world’s largest hot air balloon fiesta and he and his staff of 50 employees can fly as many as 2,500 passengers during the nine day event.   

Scott graduated from the Anderson School in 1981 with  concentrations in Finance and Economics.

International Career Information Session

UNM Alumni Mathis Shinnick will be on campus on Monday, November 25th from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to host an International Career Information Session in GSM 302. 

Mr. Shinnick will share his practical perspective on what to expect when transitioning from the classroom into the international work space. He will provide insight into international cultural issues, employers who are hiring, as well as higher opportunity career paths with the goal of fostering confidence in students who are interested in International Business.

CPA Review

UNM Earns Top Honors In Ethics Competition

A team of University of New Mexico students took first place in the Daniels Fund Initiative New Mexico Ethics Competition on November 8th. Teams from UNM and NMSU competed along with students from New Mexico Military Institute and Eastern New Mexico University. 

The teams were challenged with a hypothetical situation that required them to come up with a response to the dilemma and prepare a presentation for a group of judges led by Barney Rosenberg, VP of Ethics and Business Conduct for Meggitt, PLC, a global defense contractor. 

The competition is aimed at cultivating more ethical behavior in business, government and society in general.  It is funded through the Daniels fund Ethics Initiative which seeks to promote higher ethical standards in young people and to improve principle-based ethics education. The fund is a private foundation established by cable television pioneer Bill Daniels. 

Both UNM and NMSU received $1.25 million from the Daniels Fund along with six other universities in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.  Each school in the consortium teaches ethics and promotes ethics training off campus.  UNM offers ethics training, free of charge, to teachers from across New Mexico as part of the grant.

Dean Doug Brown will be retiring from the Anderson School of Management in June of 2014. Fall 2013 Convocation

Anderson School of Management's 2013 Fall Convocation will be held on Saturday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m. in Johnson Gym.

This year's speaker is Daniel Burrell, the immediate past Chief Executive Officer of Rosemont Realty and current member of the Board of Advisors. Prior to joining Rosemont, Mr. Burrell was President of DCB Private Equity, a boutique firm specializing in real estate debt and equity financing.

A reception will follow the ceremony.

Celebration of Giving

The Anderson School of Management recognized donors and scholarship recipients at the annual Celebration of Giving Scholarship Reception held at Embassy Suites on Friday, November 1.

Every year the UNM Anderson School of Management awards fellowships and scholarships to deserving graduate and undergraduate students. 154 scholarships comprising 97 graduate and 57 undergraduate recipients were awarded for a total of $220,000. 
Donor Ward Hickey III

Students and donors were on hand to celebrate the generosity of Anderson donors and the academic achievement of student scholars. Scholarship funds allow Anderson students to stay in school and the donors realize the tremendous impact of using their own success to help others.

Several of the donors spoke about what it means to them to sponsor scholarships and scholarship recipients, such as Do Wan Kim, David Hammitt, and Ruthann Tibbets, gave personal accounts of how the scholarships have changed their lives and allowed them to continue their education while balancing the commitments of family and work.

Dr. Patterson Journal Publication

Dr. Karen Patterson has recently been accepted for publication at the prestigious Academy of Management Journal. 

Her article entitled "Eliciting Acceptance for 'Illicit' Organizations: The Positive Implications of Stigma for MMA Organizations" was co-authored with Wesley Helms of Brock University.

Congratulations to Dr. Patterson! 

Rich Brody Featured In Farmington Daily Times

Professor Rich Brody was featured in the Farmington Daily Times, discussing the implications and challenges of fraud protection in the Farmington Convention and Visitors Bureau. 

Dr. Brody says it is not enough to have safety protocols in place, they must be followed to  prevent future fraudulent behavior.

On November 18th at 7:00 pm at the University of Minnesota Duluth, Dr. Manuel Montoya presented a lecture on poetics and business in the global political economy. The lecture inaugurated UMD's cultural entrepreneurship program which recognizes several contributions from the University of New Mexico. Congratulations to Dr. Montoya!
