Ethics Workshop


The University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University will be holding the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Teaching Business Ethics Workshop at the La Posada Hotel and Spa in downtown Santa Fe, beginning with a reception and dinner on Thursday, May 8, and the workshop on Friday, May 9. The day-long program features several compelling and timely speakers and a variety of topics and perspectives on educational and applied business ethics.

Disability And Business Education

The Anderson School of Management and the Southwest ADA Center are embarking on a collaborative project to incorporate considerations of individuals with disabilities into aspects of business education. The project focuses on developing educational materials and analytic tools designed to highlight the economic, social, and cultural benefits of access and inclusion.

Dr. Craig White, chair of the accounting department, is overseeing this initiative at the Anderson School. The Southwest ADA Center is a program of ILRU (Independent Living Research Utilization) at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston, Texas. The Center is funded by a grant from the Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).

Business To Business: David Albin

The Anderson School of Management presents David R. Albin at the Business to Business Breakfast Series on Tuesday, April 8 at the Embassy Suites. Mr. Albin will discuss the future of energy and offer observations in his talk From the 1970s to 2010s - Scarcity to Abundance: Observations from an Energy Investor. David Albin is a Senior Partner with Natural Gas Partners, a private equity firm he co-founded that has provided $10 billion of capital and sponsorship to the energy industry since 1988.

State taxes on oil and gas production plus royalties on New Mexico lands developed by the energy industry which have flowed into the state's permanent funds are the source of almost half of the state's revenues. Forty years ago during the first energy 'crisis,' pundits predicted mankind would exhaust the earth's fuel reserves, possibly within a decade or two.

Instead, energy supply and demand grew rapidly and today's predictions for future reserves call for centuries of remaining resources. How did this happen? Will today's view be wrong again? Mr. Albin will provide insights to these questions and touch on current topics such as fracking, water use, the Keystone Pipeline, alternative energy, and climate change.

Chaouki Abdallah Keynote Speaker At Spring Graduation

Dr. Chaouki Abdallah, UNM Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, will be the Keynote Speaker at Anderson School of Management's Spring 2014 Convocation.
 
Professor Abdallah obtained his BE from Youngstown State University in 1981, and his MS and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1982 and 1988 respectively. He joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at the University of New Mexico (UNM) where he is currently a professor. Between 2005 and 2011, Dr. Abdallah was the ECE department chair and became the provost and executive vice president of academic affairs of UNM on July 2011. 
 
Professor Abdallah conducts research and teaches courses in the general area of systems theory with focus on control, communications, and computing systems.  His research has been funded by NSF, AFOSR, NRL, national laboratories, and by various companies. He was a co-founder in 1990 of the ISTEC consortium, which currently includes more than 150 universities in the US, Spain, and Latin America.  He served as the general chair of the 2008 CDC, the premier IEEE conference in Decision & Control, which was held in Cancun, Mexico.  Professor Abdallah is a senior member of IEEE and a recipient of the IEEE Millennium medal.

Manuel Montoya Nominated For PNMGC Award

Professor Manuel Montoya has been nominated for Project for New Mexico Graduates of Color's Faculty of Color Mentorship Award.

PNMGC is a UNM student run, student led organization that provides services to underrepresented students on campus. The Faculty of Color Awards recognize the outstanding work of UNM faculty, staff, and teaching assistants in the areas of mentorship, commitment to research, community engagement, and teaching excellence. The awards acknowledge that UNM faculty, staff, and teaching assistants of color often go above and beyond their paid expectations to contribute to the success of students of color while serving the entire UNM campus and greater New Mexico community.

What's Your Energy IQ?

The Anderson School of Management is one of 30 schools throughout the country participating in the Challenge Your Energy IQ competition hosted by EdVenture Partners and the American Petroleum Institute (API).

Students in the digital marketing course have been tasked with developing a marketing campaign to educate their defined target audience about energy issues with the ultimate goal of driving traffic to the Energy Tomorrow Energy IQ online quiz. Participating campuses are competing for an all-expense-paid trip to San Francisco to present their research, plan and results to API's Communication Committee.

Welcome New Senior Alumni Relations Officer

Darrell Garcia is the new Senior Alumni Relations Officer at UNM Anderson School of Management. 
 
Darrell comes to UNM Anderson after spending the past six years at Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School in Albuquerque where he was a founding faculty member.  Darrell received his MBA from Anderson in 2012 with a concentration in Policy and Planning.  He also has a MA in elementary education from UNM and a BBA from Colorado State University.

In his new role, Darrell will work to reunite Anderson graduates with the business school. Local alums are invited to attend lectures, events and activities alongside members of the community and Darrell is planning events to reach out to Anderson alums living outside of New Mexico to keep them connected with their alma mater. 

“One of the most important things that students can do is to stay involved,” says Darrell.  “The Anderson School of Management provides numerous ways for both current and past students to stay connected and continue to move their careers forward.  I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, and students at Anderson to foster a culture of community and connectedness.”

Congresswoman Grisham Leads Ethics Talk


On Monday, March 10, New Mexico Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham led an engaged and spirited discussion of ethics and politics and pervasive risk areas in Congress in the Jackson Student Center on the UNM Campus.   

Congresswoman Grisham shared insights about the complexities of ethics rules for elected officials governing varied aspects of daily interaction with the public. For example, gifts and food, no matter how small, must be recorded; due diligence is necessary to track the sources of campaign contributions and expectations of donors.

Congresswoman Grisham is President of the 'freshman class' of this term's congress. She is building a reputation of reaching 'across the aisle' and working outside the party to achieve goals, and advocates for strong women representatives coming into Congress.

The event was presented by the Student Center for the Public Trust and sponsored by the UNM Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative. 

Anderson Students Receive Clauve Award

Anderson School of Management students Sydney Sivils and Frankie Gonzales are among five seniors throughout the University of New Mexico to receive the 2014 Lena Clauve Award.

The Clauve Award is given to seniors who maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and who make significant contributions to the campus and community. Sydney and Frankie will receive their awards at the annual Recognition Reception on Friday, April 4.

Congratulations to Sydney and Frankie on their outstanding achievements!

Sino-US eCommerce Workshop

The University of New Mexico and Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, are co-hosting the 6th Sino-US Advanced Workshop on Electronic Commerce on April 27-30, 2014. 

The main focus of the workshop is Big Data in eCommerce and will highlight two highly topical and important phenomena: services and big data. These topics furnish an appropriate opportunity for government offices, local  authorities, researchers and scholars, industry people to exchange ideas and  engine renovations.

The presentations will be cross-disciplinary, covering areas from  computer science to information systems and service science.  The Advanced Workshop on Electronic Commerce is sponsored by Array Development, Chongqing University Press, Journal of Internet Banking and Commerce and Journal of Management Systems.

Investment Management As A Career Option

Jeanie Wyatt, CFA, presents an opportunity for students to learn and network with local investment professionals on Wednesday, March 26 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Jackson Student Center.

Ms. Wyatt founded South Texas Money Management in December 2000 and has twice been named one of the "Top 100 Independent Advisors" in Barron's Magazine. Prior to founding STMM, Ms. Wyatt was Executive Vice President and head of Frost Investment Services (Cullen/Frost Bankers, Inc.).  Her trust-banking career spanned 27 years with three bank holding companies around the state. A Chartered Financial Analyst, she holds an honors degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Entrepreneurship In Engineering Seminar


The Department of Mechanical Engineering presents a lecture by Dr. Larry Bickle entitled 'Entrepreneurship in Engineering:  Managing People.' Dr. Bickle, a retired Co-Founder and Partner in Haddington Ventures, a Private Equity firm with over $500 million under management, will discuss the individual entrepreneur’s responsibility to both hire the “right” people and to proactively create the “right” culture. Based on real world experience and examples from Dr. Bickle’s 30+ year career as a “serial entrepreneur” involved in ten successful technical start ups (and several unsuccessful ones!), the lecture takes place in the Centennial Engineering Center Auditorium from 3:30 – 4:30 PM on Friday, March 14.
 
 

Nick Flor Chosen For Windows Development

Professor Nick V. Flor was selected as one of only 500 developers chosen worldwide to participate in Microsoft’s expanded  Kinect for Windows V2 developers program.  The Kinect combines a high-def camera, high-fidelity microphones, and proprietary software to sense the body movements, facial expressions, and sounds of up to 6 people simultaneously, and to create 3D virtual representations of actual environments. 

Dr. Flor will use the Kinect as part of his NSF-sponsored research, developing immersive apps and 3D virtual worlds aimed at educating the public on sustainable and renewable energy.  The Kinect V2 for Windows will be released to the general public sometime in Q4 2014. Dr. Flor invites members of the community to contact him regarding possible community research collaborations involving the use of the Kinect V2 in business and health.

A Message From Dean Brown

 

The United States constitution in the first amendment guarantees us the right of free speech. It is perhaps our most precious right, as the exercise of free speech is the essential antidote to abuse of power. In academia, the right of free speech is extended more fully into the workplace through the protections afforded by tenure. Tenure gives a right to those who have earned it to espouse views and to pursue avenues of intellectual exploration that may be diametrically opposed to the position of academic administration. This freedom is a great strength of academia.

But with this freedom comes responsibility, responsibility to be civil and respectful, especially to one’s colleagues. If another colleague disagrees with your position, it does not make them ‘a liar.’ If a funding proposal is advanced that one does not favor, it should not be characterized as ‘thievery.’ We should strive to disagree without being disagreeable. It is important to preserve our personal relationships so that we may achieve our common goal of excellence for Anderson.

President Frank recently issued a reminder of UNM Faculty Handbook’s Section C09, titled “Respectful Campus.” I urge all of us to refresh our acquaintance with this policy and to commit to maintaining a positive and constructive atmosphere at Anderson.

Dr. Luo Publication And Service

Congratulations to Professor Robert Luo, whose research paper entitled 'Assessment of Re-identification Risks of Data Perturbation Methods Using Record Linkage' has been accepted in Journal of Database Management.

He has also been invited to serve on the review panel for the National Science Foundation's Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace Program.  Only about 10 scholars from MIS, Psychology, Computer Science and Sociology have been invited to serve on this expert panel for NSF.  The event commences in NSF headquarters in Washington D.C. in the first week of April.

Additionally, Dr. Luo has been invited to serve as a Faculty Mentor at the Doctoral Consortium of 2014 Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems which will be held in Chengdu, China this June.  His role will be to provide comments and suggestions to doctoral candidates on their research and to participate in the expert panel discussions about advanced research avenues.

At our information sessions, program staff will discuss the Executive MBA Program in detail, explaining everything from the application process to the lockstep, cohort style program. Dr. Brody Publishes Tax Fraud Article

Congratulations to Dr. Rich Brody, whose article 'Income Tax Return Scams and Identity Theft' co-written with Christine Haynes and Hector Meija (an Anderson School of Management MBA graduate) was recently published in Accounting and Finance Research.

The paper explores why and how tax identity theft, unscrupulous tax preparers, and the rise in online financial activity all contribute to the rapidly increasing problem of income tax return scams.

Dr. Rich Brody's Nationwide Fraud Training





Professor Rich Brody will be presenting fraud training seminars in New Jersey and Chicago in March to audiences comprised of government attorneys, investigators, and law enforcement personnel.

The purpose of the seminar is education about both the pervasiveness of and the causes of fraud and white-collar crime in our society; to explore, in detail, methods of fraud detection, investigation and prevention; and to increase attendees' ability to detect fraud.

Dr. Brody’s research addresses issues related to forensic accounting, auditing and corporate governance. He has authored or co-authored over 85 publications and has made over 100 presentations at national and international conferences. Recent research has focused on issues such as corporate fraud, identity theft, mandatory auditor rotation and the impact of corporate governance structure on auditor judgment. He serves as an expert witness and has experience in both civil and criminal cases.
