2013 UNM Anderson Homecoming

Dean Doug Brown celebrates homecoming

UNM Anderson welcomed more than 200 alumni, students, faculty, and staff at the 2013 Homecoming tailgate.  Guests enjoyed food from Fuddruckers and good company before heading into University Stadium to cheer on the Lobo football team. 

The only glitch in the day was the final score.  The Lobos were defeated by the UNLV Rebels by a final score of 56 to 42.

Weston Smith Lecture October 7


Weston Smith
The Student Center for Public Trust presents Weston Smith, an outspoken advocate of ethics and integrity. 

Join Mr. Smith on Monday, October 7 for his lecture
"The HealthSouth Fraud: Rationalizations and Consequences".  His talk in the Jackson Student Center begins at 5 p.m. and is open to all UNM students and the public. 

Smith was once CFO of the Fortune 500 company HealthSouth Corporation, who over a dozen years became a Wall Street darling as it grew from one location to over 2000 in all 50 States. However, underneath the glimmering corporate office, the fleet of corporate jets, and “consistent” earnings reports, laid a multi-year multi-billion dollar financial statement fraud. Weston voluntarily came forward and exposed the fraud to the government, and accepted responsibility for his own actions.

 
Smith will share his story and discuss ethical dilemmas that students may face in their future careers, and how they can prepare for when situations arise.  He will challenge the students to build their foundation with a strong commitment to ethics and integrity.

UNM Anderson Graduate Accounting Students & Graduate Accounting Students with a concentration in IA are encouraged to apply for the Spring semester by Monday, October 14.

Interested candidates are required to complete an application, be interviewed both internally (UNM) and externally by the Albuquerque Police Department or the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department and have a background check. Selected students will serve as an intern for an entire semester working 8 hours per week with the white collar crime unit of one of the law enforcement agencies.

CFO Academy Now at UNM Anderson

Executive and Professional Education (EPE) at the UNM Anderson School of Management is the new home of the CFO Academy.  Founded by Brandon Haines and a prestigious board of trustees from diverse organizations, The CFO Academy is a professional association of Chief Financial Officers dedicated to the executive and leadership development of its community.  The move to the Anderson School gives the CFO Academy an increased ability to market its events and develop stronger ties with the business community. 

The CFO Academy’s Professional Development Series offers financial professionals information about the changing nature of their business as well as excellent networking opportunities and continuing education credits. 

Dr. Van Buren
The first event in the upcoming series is Ethics in the C-Suite by UNM Anderson Professor Harry J. Van Buren. Dr. Van Buren will discuss how the C-Suite sets the ethical tone for an organization, for good or for ill.  His interactive presentation will explore how the C-suite can promote a positive ethical tone, what systems need to be in place, and what top managers need to do to make this happen.

Anderson Memorial



Family members and friends of Donald Douglass and Robert Wertheim gathered at the UNM Alumni Chapel on Friday to remember these two devoted Anderson supporters. Both of these Anderson alums served the school as board members and on the alumni council. 
 
Mr. Douglass and Mr. Wertheim were honored with tiles on the Celebration Wall and benches named for them are located in the Chapel Garden. 

It was a wonderful way to remember these two men for their continued love and commitment to UNM and the Anderson School of Management.

Mesa Del Sol was a perfect backdrop for the 2013 Anderson Alumni Association Homecoming event on Thursday evening. 
 
Guests were greeted by avatar Dean Doug Brown and Dr. Nick Flor's students created a virtual neighborhood where guests could temporarily transform into the Dean, making him walk, turn and even jump!

Mike Daly from Mesa Del Sol, Ann Lerner from the Albuquerque Film Office, and Professor Miguel Gandert, Director of UNM's Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media Program, were on hand to address the crowd and answer questions about their high tech facilities and programs.

Homecoming Community Service Project

For the 4th year in a row, the UNM Alumni Association will collect toilet paper for its annual Roll for the Cause to support the Ronald McDonald House (RMDH) as part of its Homecoming Community Service Project. 

RMDH provides comfort, care and a home away from home for families whose children are in medical treatment.  They service over 70 family members each month in their Albuquerque location.

Also this year, with many Albuquerque Public Schools’ families in need of assistance, the UNM Alumni Association will gather much-needed donations benefiting the APS Title I Homeless Project. 

With nearly 7,000 homeless children and youth in the Albuquerque area, these donations make a tremendous difference in these students’ lives. 

Donations should include travel-size toiletries such as: shampoo, conditioner, hair brushes, soap, lotion, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

 
The UNM Alumni Association will collect items at several locations across campus beginning Monday, September 23rd through Friday, September 27th.  

You can donate items in  boxes located in the Anderson Career Services Office and also at the front desk on the second floor of the west wing. 

Ronald McDonald House

UNM Anderson teamed up with the UNM Alumni Association on Friday to provide dinner for the Ronald McDonald House in Albuquerque.

The team created a BBQ feast complete with BBQ chicken, pork, and links and all the trimmings. It was a great way to start off Homecoming Week 2013.  




There are many activities taking place on campus this week leading up to the UNM vs. UNLV football game on Saturday.

Anderson Top 5 in the Nation


HispanicBusiness Magazine ranked the UNM Anderson School of Management as the fourth best postgraduate school in the nation for Hispanic students. The ranking marks the fifth year in a row that the Anderson School has received a top ten ranking from the magazine. 

The Anderson School has a total graduate enrollment of 682, with 238, or 34.9 percent, of the student population being Hispanic. Anderson School of Management graduated 243 MBAs, with 96, or 39.5 percent of the students being Hispanic. Of the 54 full time faculty, eight, or 14.8 percent, are Hispanic.

The three schools ahead of UNM Anderson in the rankings are The University of Texas at El Paso, University of California, Berkeley, and New York University.

UNM Law, Engineering, and Medical graduate schools also ranked in the top ten, making the University of New Mexico the only university that made the top 10 in every category. Hispanic Business Magazine says, "UNM always scores high in almost every category, and its programs and efforts to attract and retain Hispanic students are second to none."

Matt Pickard Selected For Publication

Congratulations to Professor Matt Pickard on his recent paper acceptance at the AAA's Journal of Information Systems! Matt and his co-authors M.B. Burns and K.B. Moffitt will be featured in a forthcoming edition of Journal of Information Systems with their paper:  A Theoretical Justification for Using Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs) to Augment Accounting-Related Interviews.

Anderson Foundation Board of Directors Retreat

The Anderson Foundation Board of Directors kicked off their new year with a retreat and welcomed seven new board members. 

The half day event included updates on board and school events and a presentation by Dr. Scott Taylor on Emotional Intelligence (EI) and how it relates to outstanding leadership and managerial effectiveness.

A Taste of Anderson - A Tasty Success!




Top chefs from Albuquerque's most popular restaurants created quite a smorgasbord Thursday evening at the Taste of Anderson event. Guests sampled dishes while supporting the Rick and Debbie Johnson Marketing Center. 

Debbie Johnson was thrilled with the large number of supporters who attended the event, now in its third year. Guests feasted on a variety of innovative cuisine, wine, champagne, and dessert creations while raising money for marketing students and scholarships at UNM Anderson.

Those is attendance were treated to tasty samples from twenty restaurants including: Savoy, The Artichoke Café, Scalo, Yanni’s, Nick and Jimmy’s, Marcello’s, Scarpas, Nob Hill Bar and Grill, Seasons ,Zinc, Chow’s, The Cooperage, El Patron, Fan-Tang, Farina Pizzeria & Wine Bar, Farina Alto Pizzeria & Wine Bar, Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town, Kellys Brew Pub, and UNM Chartwells.

The Johnson Center is about creativity in marketing and business. The name for A Taste of Anderson came from a room that Rick and Debbie had at their ad agency called the creative kitchen where this innovative couple “cooked up” creative ideas.

Business Plan Kick-Off


Provost Chaouki Abdallah, Dean Doug Brown, and Distinguished Professor Dr. Sul Kassicieh welcomed students from all UNM schools and colleges at the kick-off for the 2014 UNM Business Plan Competition. 

The kickoff on Thursday, September 19 in the Jackson Student Center allowed students to get information, meet sponsors, and enjoy great food.

IBSG Events


International Business Students Global (IBSG) has developed a new online site where visitors can stay apprised of their many activities and upcoming events including two presentations in October in collaboration with the Albuquerque Council of International Visitors.

October 7
American, American Studies, and American/Terran Relations: Contested by the Global
A one-and-a-half hour discussion with five scholars from the Palestinian Territories will allow for the sharing of ideas about how to study the United States in a global context.

October 10
World Youth Development and Citizenship: A Discussion.
The presentation will feature five Open World Delegation scholars from Tajikistan with professional interests in youth development, human rights, and world society.  In cooperation with the Global Education Office, The International Studies Institute, and The National Securities Program.

Assistance for Small Business Owners

The University of New Mexico Small Business Institute (SBI) at the Anderson School of Management is now accepting applications from small business owners looking for assistance in business projects such as marketing, expansion, financing, or business plans. 


Stacy Sacco, the new SBI Associate Director, says this program is an excellent value for business owners.

 
“Students not only have access to Anderson instructors, but also several major business databases that would normally cost thousands of dollars to utilize,” says Sacco.

A Message from Dean Doug Brown










Friends invariably ask, “So, Doug, how was your summer vacation?”  “Boy, it must be great to have the whole summer off!”

Not to sound defensive, but what summer vacation?  The administrative staff comes to work every day, works on budgets, projects, conferences, plans for the year, recruiting, event planning, fundraising, etc.  The faculty may not be here every day, but they have a heavy research obligation. Papers submitted for publications are invariably rejected for revision and re-submission, which usually triggers additional research and documentation. Recruiting for new faculty requires a heavy agenda of interviews at academic conferences in the late summer period.

I must admit to enjoying a two week trip to China where we had a few days to visit museums and such.  However, it was a whirlwind tour through four cities, visiting six universities to arrange exchange programs – my third such trip to China in two years. 

It was a very enjoyable and productive summer, but a summer vacation it was not.

Do you know how to identify a fraudster?

On September 20, Accounting Professor Rich Brody will present The Anatomy of a Fraudster at the Albuquerque Chapter of the NM Society of CPAs.  His talk will focus on the detection and prevention of fraud.  Fraud plagues all organizations: business, both corporate and non-corporate, non-profit, governmental, and autonomous agencies of governments.
